FLASHPOINT Reading list updated 08-25-2011

FLASHPOINT : DC Mega Event

READING ORDER:
I'll use different colors to highlight different storylines. Blue:Booster Gold, Red:Flash, Gray:Batman, pupleish: Cyborg, Green: Green Lantern, Light Blue: Traci, Yellow: Secret Seven, Orange: Aquaman, Fusia: Wonder Woman,  White: Deathstroke, Salmon: Kid Flash

The main Flashpoint title can be read without all the others. The other titles can be read separately from each other, but if you read more then one then I've put this in order to the best of my ability to keep each of them from spoiling the other. Several of the cross-overs feel unfinished so I feel that you would need the Main title to get the finished story, plus I think the main title is the best of the lot. I've gave my feelings on the title at the ending number, and I've noted if they finished the story or not.

Flash Rebirth 4
Issues before FlashPoint that may help.

DC Universe 0: Has Flash coming drawn back by a sound.

Flash Rebirth 1-6: Has Reverse Flash taunting Flash and giving why he brought him back, and Max's rescue.

TIME MASTERS: Vanishing Point 1-6 or TPB- Storyline basically a waste of time, BUT Reverse Flash has one page where he is stealing information about the omega sanction, what that information is not really revealed.

Flash 7: Capt Boomarang releases Reverse Flash (Cool)
Flash 8: Reverse Flash rebirth( It's okay)

PRELUDE to FLASHPOINT

FLASH 9-12 {The road to Flashpoint):(It's okay)

FLASHPOINT: REVERSE FLASH 1(A dull rehash of what Reverse Flash has done in the past to get revenge on Flash before Flashpoint)

FLASHPOINT READING ORDER:

GREEN LANTERN FLASHPOINT SPECIAL EDITION (free comic book day comic) (link)(repeats in Flashpoint 1)

FLASHPOINT #1: Has Batman, Flash, Cyborg in it. Definition of Alchemy is listed at bottom of this post. (cool so far)
BOOSTER GOLD 44-47: (pretty good but doesn't touch the main FP title)

FLASHPOINT: PROJECT: SUPERMAN #1-2 (Awesome so far...but references to what happened in Booster Gold but to be spoiled without reading BG look at cover to 46 to know where they got the genes)

FLASHPOINT: GRODD  WAR  1-shot (Meh...and really doesn't cross)

FLASHPOINT: GREEN ARROW INDUSTRIES  1-shot (Meh..and really doesn't cross)

FLASHPOINT: Abin Sur #1(Meh )

FLASHPOINT: HAL JORDAN #1(mostly rehash about Hal before he got the ring but then the last page shows the turning point in the story, could probably skip it and go straight to issue 2)

 FLASHPOINT: Abin Sur #2(Meh..)

FLASHPOINT: HAL JORDAN #2 (really really meh, not sure of placement)

FLASHPOINT: Abin Sur #3(Meh..)

FLASHPOINT: WONDER WOMAN AND THE FURIES #1-2

FLASHPOINT: Emperor Aquaman 1

FLASHPOINT: LOIS LANE AND THE RESISTANCE #1

FLASHPOINT: Deathstroke 1

FLASHPOINT #2:   (cool so far)

FLASHPOINT: BATMAN KNIGHT OF VENGEANCE #1-3 (Really dark and graphic but still good, doesn't cross with anything but would happen between main FP#2 and FP#3)

FLASHPOINT: LEGION OF DOOM #1-3: ( meh, doesn't cross with anything but would happen between main FP#2 and FP#3)

FLASHPOINT: KID FLASH LOST #1-2 (still enjoying it)

FLASHPOINT: Deathstroke 2-3 (It's Okay, the story ends completed. )

FLASHPOINT: Emperor Aquaman 2

FLASHPOINT: CANTERBURY CRICKET 1-shot (Meh...feels like filler for Lois Lane)

FLASHPOINT: LOIS LANE AND THE RESISTANCE #2  (It's okay, unfinished)

FLASHPOINT  #3: (really enjoyable)

FLASHPOINT: LOIS LANE AND THE RESISTANCE #3

FLASHPOINT: PROJECT: SUPERMAN #3 (Awesome but unfinished...but references to what happened in Booster Gold but to be spoiled without reading BG look at cover to 46 to know where they got the genes)

FLASHPOINT: WONDER WOMAN AND THE FURIES 3(Meh! feels unfinished, this kinda smashes into Aquaman story)

FLASHPOINT: Emperor Aquaman 3(Meh! feels unfinished, it repeats a little of WW.)

FLASHPOINT: HAL JORDAN #3(Meh, does have more of a ending then other crossovers)

FLASHPOINT: Citizen Cold 1-3 (Meh! Doesn't cross with main FP other then happening because it happened.)

FLASHPONT: Frankenstein and the Creatures of the Unknown 1-3 (Not my type of story but I liked it. Doesn't cross the main FP story)

FLASHPOINT: THE OUTSIDER #1-3 (Ends with a Meh... mostly villainy)

FLASHPOINT: DEADMAN AND THE FLYING GRAYSONS #1-3 (It's Okay. It ends unfinished.)

FLASHPOINT  :4

FLASHPOINT: SECRET SEVEN 1-3 (Meh, psychedelic)

FLASHPOINT: WORLD OF FLASHPOINT 1-3 (It's Okay, Story feels self contained)

FLASHPOINT: KID FLASH LOST #3 (Decent, Not finished)

FLASHPOINT  #5 (I think it was a cop-out reason for all this to happen, but still a enjoyable book)

..

Flashpoint 1- Penciler: Andy Kubert, Inker:Snadra Hope, Colorist: Alex Sinclair

A great website for everything Flash is FLASH : Those who ride the Lighting(link)
They do an awesome job.

Alchemy Definition via link
A medieval philosophy and early form of chemistry whose aims were the transmutation of base metals into gold, the discovery of a cure for all diseases, and the preparation of a potion that gives eternal youth. The imagined substance capable of turning other metals into gold was called the philosophers' stone.
A Closer Look Because their goals were so unrealistic, and because they had so little success in achieving them, the practitioners of alchemy in the Middle Ages got a reputation as fakers and con artists. But this reputation is not fully deserved. While they never succeeded in turning lead into gold (one of their main goals), they did make discoveries that helped to shape modern chemistry. Alchemists invented early forms of some of the laboratory equipment used today, including beakers, crucibles, filters, and stirring rods. They also discovered and purified a number of chemical elements, including mercury, sulfur, and arsenic. And the methods they developed to separate mixtures and purify compounds by distillation and extraction are still important.

  1. I didn't make it to mu LCS on free comic day so I haven't been able to read the Green Lantern Special. I have read The Flash: Rebirth and The Flash: Dastardly death of the Rouges. Is The Free Comic book day special important? and I haven't read the Time Masters: Vanishing Point. Is this important? I thought this was about the return of Bruce Wayne? One more thing too, I have not been following Booster Gold, so Should I go back and read some Booster Gold stuff and if so where should I start? Thanks for any info.

Sorry to blow up your comments with so many questions.

  2. Hi Joe,
    Thanks for all your comments.

I have a link to the Flashpoint preview in the Free comic Book Day line in this post, it will take you to the Flashpoint preview. It is also at US Today.

BUT ...they only gave a preview out Free Comic book day no extra info...it is repeated in Flashpoint #1.

  3. I have Flashpoint #1 in my pull but haven't been able to get to my LCS to pick it up. I have been very excited for Flashpoint to start. I think this is going to be a huge story.

  4. hie Allysons,

    Hie Joe,
Booster Gold used to travel in time, but never change the past cause his time Master (Rip Hunter who is really future Booster's son) always says the past is fixed, and if you change something you could have the butterfly effect, so i think it's why booster gold appears in flashpoint, when you read the extra in green lantern free comics day book, i think flashpoint will be like a flashback so the link with the past, so with booster (soory for my english, i'm french and i hope you will understand waht i mean)

  5. Hi Kitfisto,

I didn't like Time Masters:Vanishing Point for various reason, and I don't want to encourage anyone to buy it, but others seem to think it would play a part in this. It sure as hell didn't do much in the Bruce Wayne storyline.

Booster Gold 44 does have Booster being effected by the Flashpoint event...I don't want to give too many details and ruin it for others but it was a good issue. BUT at this point it feels like a separate story going along beside the Flashpoint event and not really a part of the event...we'll see.

Booster Gold sorta explained why it effects him, I might post what he says later but because sometimes writers don't confer on the reasoning behind stories it might not go with what the Flash is doing and it would be more confusing if you just except what is going on and enjoy the story. Plus I don't want to spoil anything in Flashpoint.

  6. yeah You're right, and you make a good job (like you're brightest day reading order).

I read Vanishing point because i like Booster Gold but you're righ, i think you don't need to read it too.
This Book is most about Bruce Wayne Search

  8. Just saying thanks for this list. I've been looking all over for a good reading list for the series since I have been able to get each issue. Excited to take a look at the rest of the blog.

  9. Thanks Alex,
I hope it helps, if use it and I need to change something, please let me know. I might not have caught something that would move a issue up or down the pike.

  10. I don't see Deathstroke 2 in you list. Any suggestions on where it should go??

    ReplyDelete
  11. I'm sorry, I erased the 2 by mistake.
Deathstroke 2-3 can be read together. At that point it doesn't really cross with the other stories and doesn't have any of the other events shown. In the beginning it did cross with the Aquaman storyline a little, so that's why the split between issues 1 and 2.

    ReplyDelete
  12. I think I need to clarify a little more about DeathStroke 2.
Deathstroke 2, I would definitely read it where I put it for Aquaman continuity. Issue 3 doesn't have any reference to the other events so could be read later but it finishes the Deathstroke story.

  13. i noticed in wonderwoman3 they had an editor's note mentioning to read about the brittanica story in lois lane3, and the wording made me think lois3, and in turn lois 2, would come before ww3, havn't read lois2 in awhile so having trouble remembering exactly what happened, just curious, also noticed that you don't have lois lane 3 in your coming soon or already out lists. and wanted to say thanks so much for all the work your doing in ordering this series, its been a huge help!

    ReplyDelete
  14. You right! I did delete Lois lane 3 ahead of time. Thanks for pointing that out.

As far as the order, I'll have to drag them out and see how to integrate them again. I'll try to do that in the next couple of days and see where it is all at for the last set coming out on Wed.

  15. I looked at them and I think I'll keep LL 2 and WW 3 where they are at.
LL2 has Lois Lane hooking up with the resistance and nothing more, so I think that once LL3 comes out it will going after WW3. We'll see.:)

  17. Oops...I had it in there twice.
Thanks Vmars for pointing that out, I appreciate it.

  18. "Lois Lane and the Resistance" can't be before Flashpoint #3. I just read it and I saw how S1 went out from his prison. And in "Lois Lane #3", S1 is in G. Britain. He can't be there before he is escaped.

Thank you for the guide. I have used it to read the badass Flashpoint collection.

    ReplyDelete
  19. You are RIGHT!!! Thanks

    I'm sorry about that,
Heck I forgot about him escaping in that issue, especially after reading everything else,I'm sorry about that.

You're welcome for the list. I tried to make it simple yet informative, without spoiling.

Let me know if you see something else, I haven't gotten FP 5 yet, but I plan to go back through my list and helpfully make sure I'm not missing something that would make one thing or another move down ...or up the list.

  20. So, the conclusion of all your "meh" comments is that out of the 100 tie-ins I don't need to get any and will not miss a beat reading the 5 main issues only?
That would be great and a real money saver.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Some of the tie-ins were good because they didn't really tie-in.
They were more of a alternate reality stories.

    Batman was great
    Frankestien was great

The ones worth reading as part of the storyline
    Booster Gold
    Project Superman
but even with them you don't have to have them to read Flashpoint, or as long as you know that there is a alternate timelime problem you don't need Flashpoint to read them.

Some of Kid Flash Lost was well written but didn't feel complete even with the Flashpoint storyline.

When reading the forums there were two that some others liked that did nothing for me, its according how you feel about the characters I guess:
    The Outsider
    Secret Seven

The ones you think would be great tie-ins like Aquaman and Wonder Woman were a complete waste of time and felt like filler.

    The rest was Meh!

The Kid Flash was great but I didn't like the ending which wasn't.

  22. Thanks for your quick answer to me (though anonymous - not anymore).

Booster - will give it a try as everyone recommends reading it.
    Batman - well, it's the Bat-man!
Frankenstein + Deadman - I like bizarre characters and stories.
    The Outsiders - maybe
Secret Seven - nah! "secret" never does it for me. lol.

I'll come back and leave my feedback... asap.

  23. Alright then! Bad news is I'm sick - good news is that leaves time to read comics. First of all, I've never touched any Flash stories until the New 52 and that's the reason I also checked out the volume that leads into Flashpoint...

Reverse Flash - If you have read Flash 8-12 it's a waste of time and money, unfortunately. If you haven't read it, I recommend buying #8-12 instead.

Flashpoint #1-5 - Good continuation of the previous volume; I like how Barry's memories are fading and how "the" Batman is portrayed.

Batman KoV - Could be an Elseworlds story!
I don't get the Killer Croc and bar scene (both pointless) and it's a bit weird that Batman doesn't already know the Joker's identity after what had happened to... [no spoiler]! The story is pretty cool but only touches Flashpoint slightly.

Deadman - It's more a story about the Flying Graysons Circus surviving in Europe during Flashpoint. If you're fan of Deadman it's a bit disappointing until somewhere in issue #3. The story isn't bad despite the cliffhanger ending.

Frankenstein - Maybe it's because I'm sick: I read #3 first, hadn't noticed it, then got totally confused, headache, pause, re-read it. It's a fun and interesting story that fits nicely into the Flashpoint timeline without really adding or taking anything from the main story line. There's a few mistakes in the lettering; and some really weird use of German language ("Mir helfen!", "Abweichung!"), nonetheless it's probably the only story I may read again - in fact I already did.

World of Flashpoint - Don't know why I decided to get and read it but I did. It's a story about Traci 13 on a magical tour around the flashpoint world. The best part is meeting Guy Gardner in Down Under. If you like magic and mystery you should pick this up.

Booster - Haven't read it yet. Booster's not appearing in the main Flashpoint story or in any other tie-in so far and he's not one of my favorites. Maybe I'm trying Project Superman next, and then maybe Booster...

Ok. All the tie-ins are more or less self-contained stories, some end with an unresolved cliffhanger, some end well. Conclusion:

1a) Flashpoint #1-5 can be read without the Tie-ins
1b) One should know what has happened in Flash #8-12

2a) The Tie-ins can be read without Flashpoint #1-5
2b) ... but it doesn't hurt to read Flashpoint #1-2 first

    3) When trying to have a complete chronological order, the #1 of all Tie-ins should come after Flashpoint #2 like in the original checklist; and not any (issue) later! Think of the world maps and some background info in Deadman and World of Tomorrow.

  24. Totally agree with your assessment of the stories you've read Don. I think you will enjoy Booster Gold and Project Superman.

I still believe that Flashpoint #2 is better after the number 1's I listed, but you haven't read them yet.

    Hope you start feeling better.
    -Ally

  25. You're right, for the first few Superman and Booster issues, one doesn't need to know Flashpoint #2. Now, I would even recommend reading the first 2-3 Booster Gold before Flashpoint #1. It adds to Booster's confusion at the beginning and why should the reader know more than Booster himself? Great story, great ending. Nonetheless it doesn't add anything to the main Flashpoint plot though Booster meets Flash in Booster #47 while Flash doesn't not seem to get in contact with Booster in Flashpoint. How come?

Project Superman is a good story that could have been even better story-wise and visually. Some drawings and ideas (Superman lifting the car like in Action Comics #1) are great, others are too blurry and why does Subject 0 degenerate from a very interesting and intelligent character into a lame stereotype super-villain in no time who looks like a giant robot-hippie in the end?

The worst thing is, the way how Superman escapes in #2 is contradicting how it's happening in Flashpoint #3. Not everything needs to be "in" canon when it comes to comics IMHO but this leaves a big question - same with Booster & Flash (see above).

What do you think of it and Flashpoint in general?

    Cheers
    -DF
