SUPERMAN/BATMAN: TORMENT! issues 37 38 39 40 41 42 TPB Review

RATING 3.4 out of 5

Dustin Nguyen's art is as great as ever in Torment. The story is not bad, but...just ah...how can I say this... some people's Torment is other people's pleasure. Superman seems to be in 'torment' while Batman is  mostly getting "action".  Wink wink nudge nudge.
The writer, Alan Burnett, does hand out a bit of mystery, and the dialogue is decent, so it's a decent story. While the storyline is wrapped up in this trade, it does leave a teaser for the storyline that followed when the original issues came out, called, Death of the New Gods.

Spoilers

I'm sure most of you have heard of Bruce falling through time by being shot by Darkseid's omega sanction (Return of Bruce Wayne), that was Grant Morrsion's version of torment.

WELL.. here is Alan Burnett's version  of putting Bruce through Torment: The goddess of Desire from Apokolips, Bekka, has to save Bruce by... stripping him naked and putting him in bed.

While... Superman has a mental breakdown handed to him by Scarecrow.

Hmmm ....something doesn't seem fair in the handing out of Torment

But Sups does... get to face off with Bruce in a fight.. why wouldn't he want to, wouldn't you.. if you got such a bum deal.

Whose behind all this Torment?

If you haven't guessed from the covers, I'm not telling ya...

Anyway...later in the story, Bruce does get to return Bekka the favor of saving his life... by saving her life, which includes...stripping her down naked ....and bed..ding her.
Poor poor Bruce and Bekka...such such torment.

By the way...Bekka is Orion's wife, so why wasn't Bruce put in the line-up of suspects when Orion was found dead in Final Crisis...(throws hands up) just saying.

Have I ever mentioned that not only am I closet comic book reader,  but... I also... love a good ROMANCE novel.  Ashes in the Wind by Kathleen Woodwiss was my first...ROMANCE novel.  I got it when I was 13, from a yard sale.  To this day, I regard it as the best romance novel... ever.   I'm sure you'll keep that close to the chest and not tell anyone. Riiiighht.

  1. So I was a little lost at the end. Was it Batman that came and whisked Bekka away? Or was it Darkseid coming to get her to use her as collateral or something. I'm fairly new to actually reading comics, though I have Superman tattooed all over my arm for reasons of my own. So if you could shed some light on this for me, it would be much appreciated. Thanks!!!

  2. That was Orion, her husband that took her away on his "Astro-horness". That's why he gave Batman a dirty look.

IF you are talking about the very end after Orion leaves...that was the lead into..."Death of the New Gods". I don't want to spoil it for others who haven't read Torment or Death of New Gods...but she wasn't taken away ...
    This link will tell you...

...it's at the end of her biography.

  3. Just a note...
That page fooled me too...I didn't get that she wasn't 'taken away'...
so much so...that it made me go search for "Death of New Gods" and read it, to finally realize it.

  4. Okay, yeah, so I just checked that link that you posted. Um, very interesting. I find that I'm not much of a fan when it comes to spin off comics. I tend to want to stick with the whole Superman/Batman series. But I now realize that if I want the full story, I'm gonna have to break down and just start reading everything I can get my hands on. Thanks for the link. It was very helpful. (And it saves me some time in having to read a whole other series.)

  5. I love wikipedia myself. When I got back into comics it was my backdoor to finding out who was who. Otherwise I'd always be lost, because comics have become such a big soap opera.

  6. Oh don't say that. I'm a guy. I don't like wrestling (WWE and such) so comics are MY soap opera. And yes, I found that it took me a while to be up to date on my characters. Reading (pretty much) exclusively Superman/Batman, the re-introduction is coming along slowly. But thank heavens for Wikipedia. When I'm lost, I tend to just look things up. This time I just took the easy way and asked. You were a great help. Is the Trilogy any good? I've been avoiding buying it but it always catches my eye...

  7. Trilogy? or are you asking about Trinity which ran for 52 issues in 2008-2009.

For me Trinity was a disappointment. The three characters known to be the Trinity(Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman) were absent for most of the series. They were only in the first three or four issues then they disappeared. Those first issues were GREAT, then...no Trinity for 48 more issues, so I felt shafted...really shafted.

...And then the rest of it was about a universe were Batman, superman, and Wonder Woman never exist, where only a faint memory of them cause other characters to start searching for them.

...I also didn't care for the alternative story lines for the other characters, Dick Grayson became a gangster and Donna Troy was a bashful librarian...etc because "The Trinity" never existed.

We bought it as it came out...so that was part of my disappointment. Others who have bought the TPB and have the story all at once and... already know that there is... no Trinity... in Trinity, say that it wasn't bad.

It does have a lot of action.

Phew! I have a lot of pent up angst against that story.

If you really meant Trilogy, not Trinity, then I don't know what you're talking about...but I feel better now.

  8. LMAO! Yes, I meant Trinity. I don't know where I got Trilogy from. I think I just got the word confused. Hello, they both have to do with the number three! LOL! Well, I'm happy you were able to vent. And I think I've made my decision to not read it. I just hope that I don't read another comic where they refer to something that happened in the Trinity series. Cuz then I'd be pissed. I tend to take peoples' assessment of things that I would otherwise not be interested in. Especially if they have more experience in said topics. In other words, I'm new to comics so I'll take your word for it. I loved Superman: Earth One. I just bought it. Thought it was really good. It was a decision between Trilogy (lol) and Superman: Earth One. Happy I went with Earth One. And I thank you for your help and your opinions. I hope to become a true Superman comic addict one day. Just like you. LOL!
